While we are a pretty decisive couple, I can't count how many times we went around in circles in considering public schools vs private schools. My wife and I both went to public schools, growing up; we started off almost certain we wanted to have our older child start kindergarten at our neighborhood public school; when we did not get into our neighborhood public school, my wife became sure she preferred private school, while I was still leaning toward public school; when we got off the wait list into our neighborhood public school, my wife was leaning back toward public school, and I had done a complete 180 and was leaning heavily toward private school. We ultimately decided on private school. We know another couple that seemed to be settled on private school through much of the Summer, and then in the Fall, they enrolled their daughter in public school. We knew several couples who seemed to be split exactly in line with their backgrounds, where one spouse grew up going to private school and one spouse grew up going to public school. Public schools vs private schools. How do you figure it out? Do the reputed benefits of private schools match up with the exorbitant price tags? As one friend put it to me, how much "enrichment" might my wife and I provide to our child with classes, tutors, or eye-opening international travel for the same money we were considering putting into tuition checks? Does any of the factors we were trying to dissect even matter?? We are still in process of assembling our notes and thoughts for this section (and this section will be one of the more complicated to write, I think!). We are reviewing some of the available literature (including a bit of educational research), gathering stories from those we know, and organizing it all into some digestible form. But please be patient with us as we juggle our kids, day jobs, and lives with building out this website and particularly this section! Thanks once again for visiting.
